WHEELIE BIN CAMERA

I have wanted to try this for some time and now that I am working in the darkroom again I thought I would give it a go.  The council gave me a new wheelie bin to experiment with and I started making large photos using the bin as a pinhole camera.  The way the paper is bent into the bin gives the camera a very wide 180 degree angle of view which takes a bit of getting used to at first as you have to shove your subject as close as possible to be able to see it.  The resulting large negative is a great image especially since we don’t see many real negatives around now with digital photography.

THE ICARUS PROJECT

I am in the process of raising funding for a residency at the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick.  I am obsessed by flying and falling at the moment and I get really fascinated by watching the diving gannets.  I am going to study the diving birds off the Bass Rock for a while as I can visualise some great black and white images.

I have always remembered the story of Icarus and its strong effect on me at an early age and now it seems to resonate through everything I do creatively. I am going to make some images relating to this story as well as making some very large wings with feather and wax.
